Major Mexico drug cartel operating in Bogota

Mexico's Sinaloa drug cartel, headed by  Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, is operating  intensively in Bogota says the Colombian Attorney General’s office.

Jorge Saavedra, director of the Bogota Technical Investigation Corps (CTI), made the announcement after reporting the capture of eight people selling and using drugs in an area south of Bogota,  known as the "Bronx ".

"Information from a human source, says some of those people are part of the Sinaloa cartel, which is entrenched in the Bronx, and trafficking not only drugs but microtráfico" said Saavedra.

The CTI and the Army ran operation against gangs and  narco paramilitaries in the Bronx  on the weekend.

Colombia is the largest producer of cocaine in the world along with Peru, according to the UN.

Each year, local authorities seize hundreds of tons of drugs from, criminal gangs composed of former paramilitaries and drug gangs.

The drugs are mainly exported to U.S., Europe, Central America and the Caribbean, and Mexico, where Tijuana, Juarez, Los Zetas and Sinaloa cartels operate. Much of the traffic moves via Panama.

In February, President Juan Manuel Santos, ordered local authorities and the Prosecutor to investigate the alleged presence of these members of Mexican cartels, especially the Sinaloa, in several areas of Colombia.
