Giant sacred sculpture set for Amador
THE FIRST stones for the plinth of a 32 meter sculpture of Panama’s patron saint, Santa Maria La Antigua, will be laid in Amador on September 9.
The Archbishop of Panama, José Domingo Ulloa, announced on Tuesday , July 16, that the giant sculpture will be developed by the Brazilian sculptor, Felix Sampaio, will have a height of 32 meters, with atop a six feet high pedastal
The image will stand in Amador, on land donated by the Government, through the Office of the First Lady, Marta de Martinelli .
The Brazilian company Odebrecht, which has received nearly $2 billion in government contracts, will donate engineering drawings, and the construction of the base and pedestal of the sculpture.
Ulloa called on "the faithful" to join the project with donations and said he expects the work to be completed in 2014.
The initiative marks the 500th anniversary of the first Diocese of Panama.
