CSS Union leader will fight for deputy role
UNION LEADER Priscilla Vásquez, prominent in representing the interests of workers in the Social Security Service, has collected enough signatures to become an independent deputy candidate.
She will be running in the 8-8 circuit (Rio Abajo, San Francisco, Parque Lefevre and Juan Díaz).
Vasquez said that she needed the signatures of 4 percent of the registered voters in the area, which was 3,919 signatures.
After months of doing field work, Vasquez and her team presented a total of 6,700 signatures before the Electoral Tribunal TE, of which 3,952 were certified.
Other independents have until Jan. 4 to submit the paperwork for their candidacies.
Vasquez, said that she will continue seeking more signatures despite having the required number, and will also announce her alternate candidate when she submits her other documentation in January.
"We will reach the assembly with the support of the workers," she said.
On that same circuit, former Comptroller Alvin Weeden also has collected enough signatures(5,024) to run as an independent candidate. He was prominent in recent weeks in putting forward a proposal to try to unite the two major opposition parties to form an alliance to defeat the CD presidential candidate Jose Domingo Arias.
