Bus strike to protest pirate transit

A THREE-HOUR “warning” strike of bus operators in the Chorrera area is planned for Wednesday, January 22 to protest pirate buses and taxis.

Eliecer Montenegro, a public transport leader said the strike will be from noon to 3 p.m. and will be supported by all members of the public transport union Sicamoch.

Montenegro said that the action is being held to protest the operation of pirate taxis and buses. He said the government regulates the cost of transport for licensed vehicles but not for unregistered ones.
The unión is also seeking a subsidy to be paid to the operators similar to the one offered to Metro riders.
In La Chorrera, the cost of the passage to the capital in luxury buses is $1.50 and 90 cents in "diablos rojos,” says La Prensa.
Montenegro said transport union leaders in Aguadulce and Colon expressed their support for the union.
