Chamber of Commerce backs price control plan

PANAMA’S Chamber of Commerce has announced its willingness to collaborate with the "emergency price controls" proposal put forward by President-elect Juan Carlos Varela during his election campaign.

Chamber President José Luis Ford said on Friday May 16 the chamber is willing to cooperate with the mechanisms to implement the proposal of the new government.

According to the Chamber, the cost of basic foods is one of the major concerns of citizens, so it was included in the plan for the country it developed during the election.
"We look forward to finalizing a technical meeting to contribute to the definition of price control mechanisms, as well as other important aspects of the socio-economic development of the country," said Ford.
It said it wants to collaborate with the incoming government to ensure "freedom of enterprise, allowing compliance with the objective of benefiting society."
Varela said that he will sign a decree freezing the prices of 22 products of the basic family shopping basket when he takes office July 1.
