OFF THE CUFF: Not the high profile Ferrufino sought

FORMER MINISTER of Social Development, Guillermo Ferrufino, is the first of the high profile cases to be audited by the newly created  investigation arm of Panama’s Comptroller. It was not the high profile Ferrufino had sought as he basked in the limelight during his political days.

They began their work on Friday, January 16 in the case of embezzlement against Ferrufino who, at one time was a favored rising star of Ricardo Martinelli with pretensions to run for president until his mentor persuaded him to lower his sights and aim to become Panama’s mayor.

That too came to naught as stories surfaced on social media of a quarrel and shooting incident at a party at his Chorrera farm and he suddenly resigned  as Minister, citing health issues.

Social media also played a role in his recent woes when pictures appeared of his newly acquired luxury  homes and as media investigated and uncovered more details the anti-corruption prosecutors moved in.
