OFF THE CUFF: Deputies fail to agree on changes to immunity

GETTING DEPUTIES to agree to change the law do that there immunity blanket is partially removed is a hard sell, something like a lifelong criminal calling for longer sentences.

A law to toughen the rules covering the way members of the National Assembly are investigated for crimes, has created an unexpected, albeit temporary, unholy alliance between the PRD and CD parties.

Could skeletons in the closet be behind their unwillingness to support the proposed bill?
While still in Committee the Panameñista party has withdrawn from the discussions
A party statement said that there is a lack of consensus with the rest of the parliamentary factions
“The law does not meet the expectations of citizens, and we have decided not to participate in the discussion of a draft law that, instead of eliminating procedural immunity, strengthens it,” said the party.
The law was introduced by National Assembly President Adolfo Valderrama, a Panameñista member. But it was significantly changed while in committee by PRD members Pedro Miguel González, Zulay Rodríguez and Benicio Robinson. The commission approved it yesterday and CD members have shown little support.
It will not be discussed until July at the earliest under the current legislative agenda reports La Prensa.
