Panama Ex-president trial set for December 11

 THE TRIAL of  former President Ricardo Martinelli on charges he ordered the illegal surveillance of more than 150 people while in office will be held  Friday December 11.

Supreme Cort Judge Jerome Mejía said the hearing will be held at 9 a.m. It will come roughly two months after Prosecutor Harry Díaz submitted the results of his investigation that found that evidence existed that a crime had been committed.

Among those whose computers, and  phones were accessed were opposition politicians, judges, journalists and businessmen.

Two former Security Council members are in El Renacer Prison, awaiting trial in connection

With the illegal surveillance, and two operatives are international fugitives.

Martinelli left Panama on January 28. Interpol has issued a blue alert to determine his whereabouts. He was last seen in Miami, Florida.

The former president faces a number of other charges related to corruption before the Supreme Court.

Several of his former inner circle have also fled the country including one of his sons.
