Mizrachi wants Jamaica to get him off hook
IN WHAT observers see as a bizarre ploy, defense lawyers for Mayer Mizrachi, arrested in Colmbia under an Interpol Alert, have requested two ministers of the government of Jamaica to meet with Colombian authorities about his case.
According to information disclosed by the Jamaican newspaper The Gleaner, the request was made because Mizrachi, son of the brother-in law of former president Ricardo Martinelli is a citizen of Jamaica, as well as Panama.
He is being investigated for alleged offenses against public administration for allegedly failing to fulfill a $211,000 contract with the government of Panama that was issued shortly before former President Ricardo Martinelli left office. His father, linked to purchase of spy equipment during the Martinelli administration, has fled the country.
Mizrachi was arrested at the end of December in Cartagena.
His lawyers have claimed that the arrest of their client was improper because no warrant for his arrest has been issued in Panama.
