Invisible boxer earns Panama 30th world title
PANAMA BOXER Jezreel “The Invisible” Corrales brought the country’s its 30th world boxing title on Wednesday April 27 when he won the super featherweight title of the World Boxing Association (WBA) with a second-round knockout of Japanese, Takashi Uchiyama in Tokyo.
Corrales, 24 went into the fight as the underdog with Uchiyama making his 12th straight defense of his WBA crown, only for Corrales to flatten him with a monstrous left hand.
Boxing News reported that the southpaw challenger had dropped Uchiyama twice before he uncorked the finishing shot, which prompted referee Robert Hoyle to end proceedings at 2-59 of round two.
The loss ends a six-year reign for Uchiyama 36, , who has long been the world’s best at 130 lbs having stopped the likes of Juan Carlos Salgado, Takashi Miura and Bryan Vasquez.
Corrales, had been written off by most ahead of the fight given his limited level of opposition, and the fact he suffered his sole loss in his second outing as a professional.
He also struggled to make the weight, requiring several attempts on the scales at the weigh-in to get under the limit.
He has had 20 wins and one loss
