Varela at UN immigration summit

PANAMA PRESIDENT, Juan Carlos Varela, is in the  United States for  the  summit on refugees, in the framework of the  United Nations 71st General Assembly.

The plenary meeting  to tackle the massive displacement of refugees and migrants is the first of its kind convened by the General Assembly, and will run from September  19 to 23.

Varela  and  Luxembourg  Prime Minister Xavier Bettel, will co-chair the round table “Response to large movements of refugees” and be at  the table “Global Compact for safe, regular and ordered  migration towards  2030

The president will hold a bilateral meeting with Costa Rican President Luis Guillermo Solis, migration and security issues that concern both countries especially since the closure of the Nicaragua border accentuated the illegal migration problems of the region with  the passage of thousands of  foreigners heading  north.

Varela and the Foreign Ministerwill  also hold talks with the presidents of Colombia and Peru, and with Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness.

Varela’s agenda includes a meeting with Philipp Rösler, head of the Center for Regional Strategy World Economic Forum, who will explore opportunities for collaboration between the Forum and the Government.

On day 21, the president will attend the High Level Meeting on the entry into force of the Paris Agreement, where the instrument of ratification will be deposited by Panama.
