Wales defeats Ukraine 1-0 in World Cup qualifier

Wales qualified on Sunday for the Qatar World Cup (November 21 to December 18) after a 1-0 victory against Ukraine in the playoff final in Cardiff.

Although the Ukrainians had more chances, a free-kick from Gareth Bale was deflected by Andriy Yarmolenko into his own goal) was enough for the ‘Red Dragons’ to clinch victory.

It is the second time that the Welsh have managed to qualify for the competition, after the World Cup in Sweden in 1958.

In Qatar they will be in group B, paired with Iran, the United States, and England, so there will be a British duel in the group stage of the World Cup.

This also ends Ukraine’s dream of qualifying for the 2022 World Cup, despite the Russian invasion that began in February.

After having eliminated Scotland in Glasgow last Wednesday (3-1) the Ukrainians were just one game away from achieving a heroic qualification for the World Cup.

Saves from goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey and the desire for one last international adventure from veterans Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey were insurmountable obstacles for Oleksandr Petrakov’s men.
