Sharing a black-and-white portrait of Parton, Cyrus wrote: “The feeling of losing my Aunt Dolly is beyond what feels right to share. Our most sacred moments were private and they’ll stay there behind the stage, beneath the glamour and between our hearts.” “What I KNOW is Dolly would want me to feel it, write a song about it, and then continue on and be strong,” she continued. “I have an angel by my side. I always have.” Cyrus also reflected on one of her final conversations with Parton, which centered around “music and metamorphosis.”
“I will always love her and want to make her proud. My heart breaks for the world, her family and friends who will miss her deeply,” the “Flowers” singer continued. “We’re in this loss together and we will see her in all of the most beautiful things.” Parton died at the age of 80 following a short battle with cancer. Throughout her life, Parton was one of Cyrus’s biggest supporters, making appearances on Cyrus’s iconic series Hannah Montana, co-hosting Miley’s New Year’s Eve Party to ring in 2023, and, of course, giving advice and comfort behind the scenes. In fact, only months before her passing, Cyrus reached a major career milestone thanks to Parton herself.
