A Joint Operation to Prevent Dengue Fever to Be Conducted by Panama and Costa Rica at the Border
Health authorities in Panama and Costa Rica will conduct a joint dengue prevention and control operation next week in the border area of Progreso, in Barú, and Paso Canoas, in the canton of Corredores. According to Patricio Camarena, the regional head of Vector Control at the Ministry of Health in Chiriquí, the actions will be carried out from Monday to Friday with the participation of teams from both countries, due to the high mobility at the border and the ability of the Aedes aegypti mosquito pictured below, to move.
The official noted that more than 300 cases of dengue have been confirmed in Chiriquí and that the infestation levels reflect the need to strengthen prevention measures. He also reiterated that eliminating mosquito breeding grounds by avoiding containers with stagnant water remains the most effective way to combat the disease. Currently, the highest infestation rates are recorded in the districts of David, Bugaba and Dolega, although dengue cases are reported in all 14 districts of the province.
