The Panama Canal Defends its Urgency: Communities Marched in Protest Against the Indio River Dam

Farmers demonstrate during a march protesting the Río Indio project this Saturday in the town of Limón de Chagres, Colón province, Panama.

A group of farmers protested on the banks of the Indio River in the community of Limón de Chagres, on the lower coast of Colón, against the project. The Panama Canal Authority reiterates that it has held more than 200 meetings with the communities and defends the project as key to the country’s water security.

The construction of the reservoir on the Indio River to ensure water for the population and the operations of the Panama Canal has met with rejection from a group of farmers in that region, who oppose the construction and refuse to be resettled in other areas.  Olegario Cedeño, secretary of the “Peasant Coordinator for Life”, stated that the mobilization reflects the community’s rejection of the project.
