Panama Mayor, Mayer Mizrachi’s Proposed Tunnel Under the Canal Failed to Win The Boring Company’s Competition

The Boring Company will not finance the tunnel project under the Panama Canal presented by the Municipality of Panama, after announcing the results of its “Tunnel Vision Challenge”.  The Panamanian initiative, called “The Canal Underline”, was not included among the three projects selected to move forward with the company’s support.  The project was launched during the administration of Mayor Mayer Mizrachi and proposed the construction of a pedestrian and bicycle tunnel under the Canal, with the aim of improving urban mobility and connecting strategic points of the city.  Despite not being selected, the plan managed to position itself among the 16 finalists out of a total of 487 proposals submitted internationally, standing out within a highly competitive call.

What Did Mayor Mayer Mizrachi Say?

“Panama wasn’t selected, but we’ve already received an email stating that they still want to pursue the Panama Canal Underline project outside of the competition. They will send us the roadmap with details of how we will move forward in the coming weeks,” the mayor of Panama City stated on his Twitter account.

The projects chosen by the company were Nola Loop (New Orleans), Ravens Loop (Baltimore) and University Hills Loop (Dallas), which will now move to a phase of technical and feasibility analysis.  The company, founded by Elon Musk pictured above, had initially indicated that it would select a single project for full funding, but ultimately opted to choose three initiatives.  Following the announcement, The Boring Company reported that it will begin meetings with regulators, community leaders, and business stakeholders, as well as studies to assess the feasibility of the winning projects.  Although without funding, Panama’s participation in the final phase of the international challenge reflects the city’s interest in developing innovative solutions to urban mobility challenges.
