Sinaproc Issues Advisory for High Waves in the Panamanian Caribbean Until March 3 of 2026

An increase in trade winds is expected over the Caribbean Sea basin, which will generate moderate waves in various parts of the country.

Panama City, Panama: The National Civil Protection System (Sinaproc), in response to the watch notice issued by the Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology of Panama (Imhpa), informed the public about wave conditions on the Caribbean coast , valid from 10:00 am on March 1st until 11:59 pm on March 3rd, 2026.  According to the technical report, an increase in trade winds is expected over the Caribbean Sea basin, which will generate moderate waves in various parts of the country.

In the Central Caribbean, specifically in the province of Colón (Lower Coast, Central Coast, and Upper Coast), waves between 1.3 and 2.0 meters high are expected.  Meanwhile, in the Eastern Caribbean, in the Guna Yala region, the swell could reach between 1.5 and 2.5 meters, so caution is advised for swimmers and small boats.  For the western Caribbean, which includes Bocas del Toro, the Ngäbe Buglé region, and northern Veraguas, waves between 1.2 and 1.7 meters are forecast. Although these conditions could be favorable for certain maritime activities, authorities recommend maintaining vigilance and taking preventative measures.

Sinaproc Reiterated the Following Recommendations to the Public

  • Avoid entering the sea when there are strong currents or swells.
  • Take extra safety precautions on beaches in hard-to-reach areas.
  • Wear a life jacket when doing water activities.
  • Heed the warnings issued by security authorities.

In case of emergency, the entity reminded that the 911 and 520-4426 lines are available for immediate incident response.
