Panama’s ‘Pedestrian Zone’ Attracted Approximately 700,000 People and Generated $14 Million in Economic Impact

This initiative strengthened the local economy, promoted culture, and returned public space to the citizens.

The Casco Peatonal program of the Municipality of Panama registered an approximate attendance of 700,000 people and generated an estimated economic injection of close to $14 million.  According to the Mayor’s Office, this initiative strengthened the local economy, promoted culture, and returned public space to the citizens through a sustained agenda of cultural, community, and recreational activities.  The organization highlighted that these actions attracted residents, visitors and tourists, consolidating the Old Town as an active, safe and dynamic meeting point.

In economic terms, the impact was calculated based on average per-person spending on transportation, food, local businesses, entrepreneurial ventures, and cultural services.  “The initiative established itself as one of the year’s most impactful citizen activities, revitalizing public spaces, strengthening the local economy, and expanding the cultural offerings of the historic center,” the Mayor’s Office explained.  The pedestrian zone was held on the last Sunday of each month, from 8:00 am to 9:00 pm.
