The Ministry of Health Warns of an Increase in Respiratory Viruses and Calls for Strengthening Biosecurity Measures
Health authorities also reported that three cases of influenza A (H3N2), subclade K, have been confirmed so far. According to the most recent epidemiological report, so far in 2025 Panama has accumulated more than 51,000 cases of respiratory flu syndrome.
The Ministry of Health (Minsa) reiterated this Tuesday, December 23, its call to the population to reinforce biosecurity measures in the face of the increase in respiratory viruses circulating in the country during the last few weeks, especially in the context of the end-of-year season. According to the most recent epidemiological report, so far in 2025 Panama has accumulated more than 51,000 cases of respiratory flu syndrome.
Authorities maintain active surveillance of viruses such as influenza A (H1N1) , traditional influenza A (H3N2) and its subclade K, parainfluenza, SARS-CoV-2 and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), the latter with a greater impact on the child population. Regarding influenza, the Ministry of Health reports over 7,000 accumulated cases and 99 deaths nationwide. Of the total deaths, 86.9% were unvaccinated, while 91% had risk factors, highlighting a greater danger of serious complications in unvaccinated individuals or those with pre-existing conditions.
Health authorities also reported that so far three cases of influenza A (H3N2), subclade K, have been confirmed in the country, which continue to be under epidemiological monitoring. “Continuous surveillance allows us to identify circulating respiratory viruses early on and take the necessary measures to protect the population, especially the most vulnerable groups,” said Yelkys Gill, Director General of Public Health.
The official urged citizens to promptly visit health centers if they experience symptoms such as fever, cough, nasal congestion, or difficulty breathing, and reminded them that early detection significantly reduces the risk of complications. The Ministry of Health reiterated its call to maintain preventive measures, including frequent hand washing, the use of masks in case of respiratory symptoms, avoiding crowds and completing the vaccination schedule, especially in children, older adults and people with chronic diseases.
