Foreign Student Manages to Carry the Panamanian Flag and Receives a Full Scholarship: From Veto to Honor!
After being prevented from carrying the flag in early November, Rosanel Quiroga shone in Chepo and ended up being awarded a university scholarship.
Rosanel Quiroga, a foreign student at the José Antonio Remón Cantera School, experienced an incident a few weeks ago that made her a national topic of conversation: She was prevented from carrying the Panamanian flag during the patriotic parades. But the story took a turn quickly. In the district of Chepo, Quiroga finally managed to carry the emblematic flag with pride, as it is the first place of honor in the school.
“I am at the Chepo parade as a flag bearer of the beautiful Panamanian flag,” she excitedly shared on her Instagram account.
The young woman recounted that she never imagined the extent of what had happened. She said she was at a “perfectly normal and peaceful” parade when she was approached for an interview. “Then, as the days go by, that same interview becomes a media sensation; your face appears everywhere—in the news, on social media. Even on Google, as soon as you open it, there’s my face. That happened to me a couple of weeks ago,” she shared on the social network. But from the chaos came a reward. Rosanel revealed that the University of the Isthmus contacted her and offered her a full academic scholarship.
“From chaos come opportunities, no matter how hard or difficult the path may be,” she said.
In response to the initial controversy, the Ministry of Education (Meduca) expressed regret over the events and clarified that current regulations do not prevent foreign students from participating in civic and patriotic events, including carrying the national flag, provided they meet the established merits and requirements. Rosanel Quiroga’s story went from controversy to inspiration, and now a new chapter full of opportunities begins.
