Panama’s Balbina Herrera Wins as General Secretariat of the PRD

The position of Secretary General would be held by a woman for the first time.

Balbina Herrera is poised to become the new Secretary General of the Democratic Revolutionary Party (PRD), according to unofficial results released this Sunday during the party’s internal elections.  Balbina Herrera, a historic figure in the Democratic Revolutionary Party (PRD) and former president of the group, leads the preliminary results for the General Secretariat, a position that would be held by a woman for the first time.  Herrera, who entered the race with a speech about internal reorganization, thanked the National Directorate for the day and stated that this process represents “the beginning of the reconstruction of the PRD.”

During the morning, Herrera maintained that these elections open an opportunity to reorganize the party’s structures, strengthen cohesion, and generate an “internal alliance” capable of uniting all factions within the party. “This is a moment to build unity and recover the essence of the PRD ,” he stated before casting his vote.  Although Herrera asked to wait for the official results, he celebrated the participation of the membership and described the day as “extraordinary”.  Once the winners have been proclaimed and the formal processes of the Electoral Tribunal have been completed, the new members of the CEN will assume their duties immediately, prior to a reorganization meeting that would be convened in the coming weeks.

The list of candidates who would accompany Herrera on the National Executive Committee is made up of:

First Vice Presidency: José Luis Fábrega

Second Vice Presidency: Jesenka Espinoza

First Under Secretary: Raphael Buchanan

Sixth Undersecretary: Arquesio Arias
