A Panama Chiriquí Province Senior was Electrocuted While Knocking Down Coconuts Using a Metal Rod

Edgar Hernández, 65, died Saturday afternoon after receiving an electric shock while knocking down coconuts in the Progreso area of the Barú district, Chiriquí province. According to initial reports, the incident occurred when Hernández, affectionately known as “Cundo,” was attempting to harvest coconuts from a palm tree. At that moment, the pole he was using accidentally made contact with a high-voltage cable, causing a fatal shock. Neighbors in the area alerted authorities after noticing what had happened.
Paramedics and Progreso Fire Department units responded to the scene, but were only able to confirm that the man was no longer showing vital signs. The area was cordoned off by units of the National Border Service (Senafront), while personnel from the Barú Deputy Prosecutor’s Office and the Criminalistics Unit of the Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences (IMELCF) carried out the necessary procedures to remove the body. The incident has caused deep sadness among Progreso residents, who remember “Cundo” as a hardworking man, dedicated to agricultural work and well-loved in the community.
