5 Citizens Arrested and More than 1400 Rounds of Ammunition Seized in Veracruz in Air-Naval Operations

The National Aeronaval Service not only arrested five citizens who were caught with a suitcase containing ammunition of various calibers, but also had to use tear gas to repel a crowd that, according to the institution, was trying to impede the normal operation. It turns out that the Aeronaval was in the mangroves of Veracruz, Arraiján district, on an operation to rescue a boat that had been reported stolen. However, the suspicious behavior of five citizens triggered alerts among officials. “Upon noticing the presence of our personnel, the individuals fled into the sea,” the Naval Air Force stated, but nevertheless praised the swift action of its personnel in achieving “the arrest of five men and the seizure of a suitcase.”
The Aeronaval details that the black suitcase contained 11 packages lined with transparent plastic with a total of 1,465 unexploded ammunition of different calibers, of which 603 are caliber 12, 150 caliber 9 mm, 150 caliber 380, 90 caliber .40 and 472 caliber 5.56. What’s striking about the operation is that, according to the Naval Air Force, “as the detainees were being led away and the seized evidence was being transported, a crowd in the area attempted to obstruct the operation by throwing blunt objects.” Faced with this unexpected attack by members of that crowd, “tear gas was necessary to repel the attack and restore order.” It was also reported that the vessel was recovered and located in the Chumical mangroves of Veracruz. It remains in custody at our facilities for further processing by the Public Prosecutor’s
