Panama’s Opposition Leader Jorge Herrera Elected as President of the National Assembly Defeating Front Runner Shirley Castañeda

In a five-hour day of tension, five hours of political arm wrestling in the National Assembly, maneuvering, and political pressure, the National Assembly elected opposition leader Jorge Herrera as president, in a surprising defeat for Shirley Castañeda, the RM candidate.  Vote by vote, Jorge Herrera prevailed and halted the advance of Martinelli’s candidate.  Mulino supports Jorge Herrera’s election and reiterates respect for the separation of powers.
