Panama Crisis with Chiriqui Province Tourism, due to Protests and Road Closures

The tourism sector in Chiriquí faces a critical situation due to constant blockades on the Inter-American roadway. Cancelations at hotels and accommodations already reach 80%, while occupancy barely reaches 20%, according to figures from the Chamber of Tourism.  Businessmen of Boquete — one of the country’s top tourist destinations — report a drastic drop in reservations, also affecting restaurants, transport operators and other related sections.  Uncertainty generated by protests has hit the term one school holidays as many visitors fear being caught in by closures.  The tourist guild has asked the National Government to reach consensus with protesters opposing CSS Act 462, warning that the continuing conflict could have long-term economic consequences for the entire region.
