Sunday, Monsignor José Domingo Ulloa Discussed Sovereignty over the Panama Canal, Scandalous People Inequality, Armed Conflicts, and Social Security

Ulloa referred to Panama’s internal problems, such as the ‘scandalous inequality’.

Sunday, hundreds of parishioners gathered at the Minor Basilica of Jesus of Nazareth in Atalaya and its surroundings to attend the open-air mass in honor of the patron saint and to give thanks for the favors granted through his intervention, as indicated by the Catholic faith.  The event was presided over by Monsignor José Domingo Ulloa, who in the middle of his sermon, asked Panamanian Catholics to become ‘ messengers of peace for those who suffer and have lost faith’, which is the mandate of Pope Francis in this jubilee year.  “Let us be bearers of light and hope because without hope our world will be nothing more than an immense cemetery,” said Ulloa.

The moment was also appropriate to talk about the geopolitical situation that the world has been facing in recent months due to the confrontation between the United States, China and Russia, as well as the proliferation of armed conflicts that “cannot be ignored.”  In this regard, he recalled that Panama has been the target of unacceptable attacks and questions, including the affront of questioning sovereignty over the Panama Canal.   I go on to point out that “we reject any attempt to minimize the sacrifice of the youth on January 9, 1964.”  “Sovereignty is not begged for, sovereignty must be defended,” exclaimed the leader of the Catholic Church in Panama.

He then spoke about the country’s internal problems, highlighting the evident and “scandalous” inequality that exists, and asked for honesty, since the problems are the result of what the government and the people have not done well.  Ulloa also took the opportunity to speak about the discussion of reforms to the Social Security Fund , stating that he does not want partial solutions, nor political or economic interests over the common good, but rather decent pensions, equitable access to health and a more humane and efficient system.  “We have to change the logic of imposition and violence for a dialogue from below with all sectors. Those who have the power to decide, it is essential, act responsibly, with a vision of the country and with love for Panama,” he said.

“We reiterate that Panama is sovereign, independent, and we do not accept interference or doubts about our right to decide our future.” said Ulloa. “It is time to raise our voices and remind the world that we are the masters of our destiny. The defense of Panama is not a speech, but an active commitment of each citizen. Together we reaffirm our right to be a free, sovereign and fair country.” he emphasized.
