Shipwreck in Guna Yala Leaves Migrants and Crew Members Missing

They managed to rescue the other 20 occupants who were also traveling on the boat in Guna Yala. Senafront deeply regrets the loss of the minor and extended its condolences to her family.

The National Border Service reports the death of a female minor of Venezuelan nationality and the rescue of 20 people after a boat sank in waters near the community of Mansucum, in Guna Yala.  The incident occurred as a result of reverse migration flow, and emergency protocols were immediately activated with units of the Caribbean Brigade.  Three vessels set off from the Port of Llano Carti bound for La Miel, in Puerto Obaldía.  Two of them suspended their journey due to adverse conditions, while a driver ignored the warning and continued on his way. That decision led to the unfortunate incident.

The ABDOM vessel was carrying 21 occupants; 20 people were rescued, some shown in the picture above, and the death of an 8-year-old Venezuelan girl was confirmed. Those rescued are receiving medical attention and humanitarian assistance from SENAFRONT. Likewise, coordination was made with the Guna Yala Ombudsman’s Office for the corresponding proceedings,” the institution’s statement said.  Senafront deeply regrets the loss of the minor and extended its condolences to her family.
