In Panama, Former President Ricardo Martinelli’s Defense Denies Charges in Spain Case

Martinelli is mentioned in this investigation and the Spanish government is giving him the opportunity to request clarification regarding his rights.

Ricardo Martinelli’s defense denied the publications that have been made against the former president, in relation to the fact that he has been charged in Spain with an alleged crime of gender violence.  Attorney Roniel Ortiz said that these accusations are completely false.  Ortiz clarified that Martinelli is mentioned in this investigation and the Spanish government is giving him the opportunity to request clarification regarding his rights.  Ortiz and Martinelli reiterated that the accusation is false and that this has been corroborated by the lawyer Julio Sánchez in Madrid and Valencia, Spain.  Martinelli, meanwhile, said that he “has no say in that matter” and asked his lawyers to assert his rights under the law.

Martinelli’s safe passage to Nicaragua is an issue that is still on the table.  His spokesman says that the former president would prefer to stay in Panama but not in the embassy.  Ricardo Martinelli, isolated but unrestrained, defies legality and continues to shake up the political landscape during his stay in the Nicaraguan Embassy.
