DGI revelations call for exemplary action

The revelations of a driver of the head of the General Directorate of Revenue (DGI) are very serious. This official, if he accepted money in exchange for confidential information, would have jeopardized an investigation for alleged tax fraud in which, in addition to Panama, there are other interested jurisdictions. On the other hand, if what the official said is true, who would have paid for the information is, precisely, the object of investigation, so his intentions would not be holy at all, perhaps he would even have sought to obstruct it. It is imperative that this whole matter be clarified with a thorough and transparent investigation because this intimidation of officials and authorities with actions like these or with blackmail and extortion or with political maneuvers has to end. And the way to do it is not with timid actions, but with exemplary sanctions so that the message is clear, without any doubt. The seriousness of these revelations tells us how far individuals can go who seek, at any price, to evade justice, circumvent our laws, and that, in doing so, there are no consequences. For the good of the institution, these practices must be put to an end. – LA PRENSA, Jul. 6.
