Probe of fentanyl theft seeks links to organized  crime

The Attorney General, Javier Caraballo, spoke Wednesday, March 22, about the progress of the investigation into the theft of 19,000 doses of fentanyl from the Social Security Fund (CSS).

The drug is highly prized by drug cartels and DEA warns of a ‘sharp increase’ in fentanyl trafficking with the zombie drug in the US

According to the prosecutor, inspections are being carried out in the central warehouse, the Hospital Complex warehouse, the pharmacy, and the medical address.

Until now, the investigation is framed in the loss of an important opioid within the CSS. “It will be the proceedings that are carried out that can give other edges,” said the attorney.

He reiterated that the report that accounts for the loss of the fentanyl reached the Public Ministry, the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office on March 6, so far there are no detainees, but they are trying to reconstruct is the chain that occurred from the moment of entry of the opioid until it came into the hands of “someone”.

He said that in November a complaint was received about an anesthesiologist who left a bag in a CSS reception area and when checked it contained 12 vials of fentanyl.

An investigation began for those 12 vials in November, as a result of it, the CSS began an audit and delivered to the Public Ministry on March 6, the reported loss of approximately 19,000 doses.

The prosecutor maintained that opioid is highly valued by drug cartels, but the investigation by the Public Ministry must be step by step and it cannot fall into speculation, and they will gather all the elements, which will make it possible to define whether or not there was the participation of organized crime.
