Rod Carew steps up to the plate for Pete Rose
The former major leaguer and member of the Hall of Fame, the Panamanian Rod Carew, has raised in defense of former baseball player Pete Rose, who is still marginalized from the group of immortals of the Major Leagues because he is involved in betting reports La Prensa.
Carew classified as “hypocritical” keeping Rose out of the Hall of Fame, when the Majors allow betting houses inside the stadiums.
The issue arose when the Istmeño exchanged messages with his fans on his Twitter account and someone asked him what he thinks about sports betting.
“It has gone too far and is hypocritical. How can you keep Pete Rose out and have a sportsbook in the Reds’ stadium?” said Carew, who played 19 seasons in the Big Top and entered Cooperstown in 1991.
“If they can embrace the game, to the level of putting it in the stadium, they can forgive Pete and recognize him for how great he is. That is the point,” he added.
Rose was suspended in August 1989 after allegations surfaced that he had gambled while he was a player and manager for the Cincinnati Reds. The slugger denied those accusations until 2004, when he finally came clean and admitted to gambling, but claimed that he always bet on the Reds.
