Mining companies  seek arbitration linked to Canada FTA

 First Quantum and Minera Panama have notified Panama of their intention to submit to investment arbitration claims under the Canada-Panama Free Trade Agreement.

In addition, Minera Panama SA has submitted to Panama a notice of Commercial Arbitration under the Rules of Procedure of the Inter-American Arbitration Commission based on the contract that granted Minera a concession over the Cobre Panama project area.

On Friday, December 23, First Quantum and Minera Panama took steps to initiate the two arbitration processes against Panama, despite the agreement of both parties to meet.
