Netflix suspends services in Russia
AFP – The American streaming platform Netflix suspended its services in Russia in protest against the Russian invasion of Ukraine, several US media reported this Sunday, March 6.
The online video giant had earlier this week halted its acquisitions in Russia as well as its production of original shows.
“Given the circumstances on the ground, we have decided to suspend our service in Russia,” a spokesman told the US magazine Variety .
Questioned by AFP, Netflix did not immediately offer comments.
The world’s streaming leader with 221.8 million users at the end of 2021, Netflix is a minor player in Russia, where it has fewer than a million subscribers, according to The Wall Street Journal.
The group does not publish figures specifically for the Russian market and did not respond to an AFP request about the number of users in Russia.
Netflix joins many other foreign companies that have announced the suspension of their activities or the total withdrawal of Russia since it launched an offensive against Ukraine.
On Monday, Netflix told the Vulture portal that it had no intention of complying with the Russian law that requires streaming platforms to offer several free channels, some of which are considered a source of government propaganda.
