Google pays tribute to Panamanian-American nurse
The Google Doodle paid tribute on Wednesday, September 15 to the Panamanian-American nurse Dr. Ildaura Murillo-Rohde who founded the National Association of Hispanic Nurses (NAHN).
The tribute is due to the beginning of the celebrations on the occasion of National Hispanic Heritage Month in the United States
Born in Panama on September 6, 1920, into a family of health professionals, Murillo-Rohde arrived in the United States in 1945. Her nursing career began in San Antonio. Texas, a city with a majority Hispanic population.
The professional stood out for having the vision to help Latinas secure their education, not only for their own benefit but also for the sake of serving their community. For this reason, he founded the NAHN in 1975 after noting how little support Latin nurses received.
She earned a bachelor’s degree in psychiatric and mental health nursing from Columbia University in New York. She continued his studies and earned masters and doctorates. In 1971 she became the first Hispanic nurse to earn a Ph.D. from New York University. She earned a scholarship from the American Academy of Nursing, one of the highest honors in nursing.
Murillo-Rohde was an active member of the American Nurses Association (ANA). She was also a consultant for the World Health Organization and a representative at the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
NAHN currently supports Hispanic nurses through various programs, including the Dra. Ildaura Murillo-Rohde Fellowship.
