Highest number of new covid infections among under-20s

The highest number of new Covid-19 infections in Panama is among those under 20 years of age reports the Pan American Health Organization, although the figures reflect a slight decrease in the last week.

PAHO details that in the last two epidemiological weeks the country has exceeded 7,000 new cases in each one, with a stable trend of about 1,000 daily cases since the beginning of July.

Separating the new infections by age groups, the international body’s report specifies that in epidemiological week 27 (July 4 to 10) the highest number is contributed by those under 20 years of age, exceeding 1,600 new cases.

In addition, the group of people between 20 and 30 years old registered approximately 1,500 new cases in this period; in the 30 to 40 years there are 1,400; in the one from 40 to 50 years with about 1,200; and between 50 and 60 years around 1,000 cases.

The director of the Metropolitan Health Region, Israel Cedeño, said on  Wednesday that the majority of infections have always occurred in the population aged 40 to 59, but: “The last two weeks most of the cases have been in the group of fewer than 20 years. That tells several things: it is a very active group both socially and economically, it moves a lot to work and for clandestine parties and that we have not been able to vaccinate until now, ”he said
