Ex-Cop who killed George Floyd sentenced to 22 1/2 years jail

Former police officer Derek Chauvin was sentenced to 22 1/2 years in prison on Friday for the murder of African-American George Floyd, a murder that sparked the largest demonstrations for racial justice in the United States in decades.

“Sentencing is not based on emotion or sympathy,” Judge Peter Cahill said in sentencing in a Minneapolis court after prosecutors asked for a 30-year sentence. He added in a short speech that he was not based “on public opinion” either, but on the law and the specific facts of the case.
