Moves underway  for recall of quarantine-flouting  mayor

With at least three investigations underway into the flouting of total weekend quarantine rules by Panama mayor, José Luis Fábrega and a request for revocation of his mandate is underway, after he, was fined for failing to comply with the weekend lockdown.

On Tuesday, August 4, Raúl Rodríguez, a former independent candidate for the Municipality of Panama in the May 2019 elections, filed a petition with the Electoral Tribunal (TE) to initiate a process of revocation of the mayor’s mandate. In the action, he asked the TE magistrate Heriberto Araúz to deliver books to collect the necessary signatures.

Rodríguez bases his request on an  article in the Electoral Code,  in which the revocation of the mayors’ mandate,  may be activated “By decision of the voters of the respective constituency, by means of a recall referendum

According to the law, the mandate of mayors may be revoked with 30% of the signatures of the 950,558 voters in the district will be required, according to the. 2019. voter registry

On Monday, the governor of the province of Panama, Judy Meana, announced the opening of a preliminary investigation to the mayor, and the National Authority for Transparency and Access to Information did the same while the lawyer Rosendo Rivera denounced Fábrega before the Public Ministry for the alleged commission of crimes against public safety.
