OPINION: Health vs The Economy
The Panamanian Society of Internal Medicine, which lists many leaders in the fight against coronavirus in emergency rooms, is asking the government for a new absolute quarantine, for 15 days. According to the doctors, this measure, applied as it should be and with the accumulated knowledge, should change the dynamics of the terrible pandemic
in Panama. In contrast, the spokespersons of the microentrepreneurs request a greater opening of the economy to recover their income and encourage more economic activities. What appears to be a conflict between two opposing positions, can be resolved through the exercise of determined leadership, accompanied by an effective organization of State services.
If science justifies a quarantine, the mistakes of abandoning the most vulnerable population cannot be repeated, nor the proliferation of safe-conduct passes. When the initiatives are well-coordinated, health does not suffer from the economy, nor should the improvement of the economy favor infections.
