Ex security chiefs wiretap jail terms confirmed as boss Martinelli roams free
Panama’s Second Superior Court of Justice confirmed the sentence of 50 months in prison for the crime of inviolability of secrecy and the right to privacy to Alejandro Garuz and Gustavo Perez former directors of the National Security Council in the government of Ricardo Martinelli (2009-2014 ).
The magistrates decl ared Garúz and Pérez criminally responsible as primary accomplices, for the illegal interceptions of 150 people, including politicians, businessmen, trade unionists, journalists and opponents of the Martinelli government.
Both former officials meet with the measure of an impediment to leaving the country and notification.
In the case of the wiretaps, a court of three judges declared Martinelli “not guilty” last August The decision is the subject of several appeals, which lie unresolved in the Supreme Court.
