OPINION: A light gleams  in Supreme Court

The magistrate of the Supreme Court of Justice, María Eugenia López Arias, yesterday presented her affidavit before a notary in the capital city. So far, nothing out of the ordinary. What transformed the bureaucratic process into a gesture of transparency, was that the magistrate made public the content of the statement. This gives hope to Panamanian society, that finally, the clamor for transparency has been understood. When these asset declarations are public, citizens can follow up on that heritage. Unfortunately, the law does not require its publicity, so it is a voluntary act of each official. Now his colleagues in the Supreme Court, the new ones and those already there, should follow his example and disseminate his patrimonial declarations. LA PRENSA, Dec. 17
