OPINION: Defeating the common enemy- crime
With the appointment of the new Attorney General, the responsibility of the executive branch in justice matters is not terminated. The Attorney General’s Office requires a greater allocation of funds for the fulfillment of its missions. Likewise, the Ministry of Public Security and the National Police must facilitate human resources and effective coordination with the Public Ministry to defeat the common enemy of all Panamanians: crime.
In turn, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Financial Analysis Unit must align with the commitment of a Panama free of impunity and without corruption. The new officials have the obligation to honor the institutionality of the Public Prosecutor, respecting the officials who have bared the breast for the country.
It is clear that breaking with the continuity of high-profile investigations would be to hand over the country to the corrupt and their satraps. The future of Panama is in the hands of public servants responsible for prosecuting crime and for doing justice. That effort is just beginning. LA PRENSA, Dec. 11
