OPINION: Panama opts out of world view

More than three years ago, the Supreme Court received a judicial appeal that demanded the incorporation of equal marriage into our legal system. While the Court delays its decision for or against, the National Assembly took advantage of the consideration of the proposals for constitutional reforms to restrict marriage as an exclusive link between a man and a woman. To anchor this worldview, it was proposed to attribute superiority over international law to national law.

Thus, with this constitutional shield, Panama would not have to abide by the decisions of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights on equal marriage. With this regulation it is with which certain deputies and the religious interests that support them intend to silence an inalienable human right.

For centuries, The struggles for the freedom of people have sought to broaden the scope of self-determination and autonomy of the will of each human being. The proposals for constitutional reforms are going in the opposite direction. LA PRENSA, Oct 30
