Students protest “constitutional mockery” process
Student groups of the University of Panama (UP) who protested on the Transistmica way, on Thursday, October 24 in rejection of the whole package of constitutional reforms, agreed not to return to the streets on Friday following meetings with the University rector
The protesters, who placed tires and banners on the street, consider the current process to reform the Magna Carta as a “mockery of the people”, denouncing the lack of consultation to modify the document.”It is clear that this package of constitutional reforms is not representing the majority of the population … queries were minimal and the National Assembly itself is a discredited entity that lacks the legitimacy to discuss a document as important as the Constitution, “said student leader Ileana Corea.
Students ask that the reforms currently discussed in the Legislature be withdrawn and an original Constituent Assembly be convened
