ENVIRONMENT: An island saved from marauders
We live on a finite planet. In our time valuable ecosystems are disappearing by human action. Faced with this, it is encouraging that the Ministry of Environment has initiated the consultation to declare the island Boná and its surroundings, as a wildlife refuge.
The pristine island was the protagonist of the ambition of politicians and investors, who sought to develop a marine fuel tank farm by risking the existing forest, reefs and thousands of migratory bird nests, which have Boná as their passing home in Panama. Now there is the opportunity to protect this island as it should be, hopefully, the Ministry of Environment will take the initiative to take this protection a step further, and propose a law initiative to guarantee the maximum possible conservation. Boná Island is an example of the great treasures that we can lose in this country. Its wealth and its natural heritage will serve as a showcase to know and protect a natural world threatened by unconsciousness.
Thanks to civil society and the scientists who warned of danger, today Boná Island is closer to being hope for a better future. –LA PRENSA, Sep. 24
