Catholic priest stabbed at the altar

A  Catholic priest was stabbed during a Mass broadcast live on Friday, March 23  at the Saint Joseph’s Oratory in Montreal, the largest church in Canada,  police reported said.

The suspect was arrested in the Roman Catholic basilica soon after while the priest was taken to the hospital.

The police told AFP that the  priest was “slightly wounded in the upper body” when, according to witnesses quoted by the authorities, “the suspect suddenly ran to the priest and attacked him with a knife.” His life is not in danger.

According to the spokesman of the Catholic basilica, one of the most important in Canada, the attacked priest is the rector of oratory, Father Claude Grou.

He was attacked during the 8:30 am  mass, transmitted live over the internet and attended by fifty people,

When the police arrived, the alleged attacker had already been captured reduced by the church’s security services, spokeswoman Céline Barbeau said.
