OPINION:  Canal Meritocracy an  example for Panama

The board of directors of the Panama Canal Authority, despite very serious questions against some of its members, was able to give a lesson of hope to the country. The economist Ricaurte Vásquez was appointed as the new administrator of the Panama Canal. Vásquez has an impressive professional resume, which combines extensive government experience with his years of work as a sub-administrator of the interoceanic highway, and valuable time in private enterprise. Together with the engineer Ilya Espino de Marotta, who will serve as assistant manager, from January 1, 2020, they give the country, the maritime sector and the international community peace of mind and confidence. The methodical and technical process with which the choice of Vásquez and Espino de Marotta was made should serve as a model for political parties, universities, and senior government positions since you can not improvise leadership or work capacity. The new appointees represent the best that the ACP is, a meritocracy, for which talent and work are the keys to improvement. The challenges facing the Panama Canal are vast and complex. But these designations give us the best opportunity to overcome them. This example must be copied widely since the whole country deserves a better destiny as a result of the reward of merit and the best talent. The challenges facing the Panama Canal are vast and complex. But these designations give us the best opportunity to overcome them. –LA PRENSA, Feb.16
