OPINION: Rewarding the powerful with impunity

IN the corridors of the Supreme Court of Justice it is rumored that a draft ruling declaring that the deputy Yanibel Ábrego,  president of the National Assembly, has not committed contempt for refusing to deliver information on the items and contracts of the National Assembly. If true, this may be an indication of the existing impunity pact between the Supreme Court and the Assembly. The deputy Ábrego has used all kinds of tricks and stratagems to avoid disclosing information on the use of state monies by the body that she presides over. La Prensa requested this information with the detail that the Law of Transparency demands, however, again and again, we were denied access to these public data and she even wanted to repeal this law by means of an absurd judicial recourse. It is an impudence that the top court tries to say that the deputy complied with the norm when the same Court finds out that this is not the case. In this way, this court can become an accomplice to the theft of millions funds that belong to all Panamanians. This is how the cocking of snoots of the powerful are rewarded: with impunity.- LA PRENSA. Jan.4
