China’s Ambassador  to Panama  has accused the United States   of a “double standard” and “arrogance” in its purest form

Ambassador Wei Qiang, who reacted through Twitter to the call to Washington of US  heads of mission in Panama, El Salvador, and the Dominican Republic, over the decisions of these countries to break ties with Taiwan.

The diplomat criticized the US  for causing “upsets ” in other nations.

In its announcement, the US government did not specify when it would analyze the issue with its but gave in evidence the concern of President Donald Trump over the influence that China is having in the region. “(…) will meet with government leaders to analyze the ways in which the United States can support strong, independent and democratic institutions and economies throughout Central America and the Caribbean ” said a State Department message.

The decision of the Trump administration was viewed positively by John Feeley the  US ambassador in Panama until last March,  says  The New York Times.

“It’s an appropriate and serious signal from the US Government for those three countries and for the Chinese government that is now reviewing the implications of diplomatic change, “, he said.

Feeley warned that China will focus on industrial and commercial espionage, with the possibility that  Beijing will use its embassies to expand that activity.

Panama broke relations with Taiwan on June 12, 2017, and that same day recognized the People’s Republic of China. From that follows negotiation for a free trade agreement and China has raised its profile of participation in public works tenders.
