Street protest marks student crossing death
Students, teachers, and staff of the Technological University of Panama (UTP) held a peaceful protest on Vía Centenario in front of the university campus, on Monday. Jul.30 following the death of student Rosaida Lorenzo, 18, the previous Thursday.
“We demand a bridge for our young people to achieve their dreams and goals, a necessary bridge, not a whim like the one in the Assembly”, said demonstrators referring to a much-ridiculed $1 million enclosed access route for lawmakers to avoid being seen when accessing the National Assembly.
Calculators, books and work helmets were placed on the security crossing line at the UTP where the student was run over by a woman driver who ignored signals from a police officer, at the entrance of the UTP.
A human chain in honor of the dead student was formed on Tumba Muerto.
