10 traffic deaths in first half of week
Three accidents in an 11 hour period on Wednesday, July 11, brought highway deaths for the first half of the week to 10.
At 4:00 pm in Cañazas. Veraguas.Yamileth Yaneth Rodríguez, 20 injured in a rollover, died in the local hospital. The driver and two men in their twenties were injured. Police attributed the accident to speeding
Hours later, Luis Alberto Miter Castillo, 40. was killed in another rollover while driving a taxi in Chepo, Panama East. Again, the accident was put down to speeding
At 11:30 on Wednesday night Alcibíades Javier Pitti Saldaña, 67, was hit by a sedan on the main road of Los Anastasios in the District of Dolega, Chiriqui. He died in the emergency room of the Regional Hospital Rafael Hernández de David.
A witness said that Alcibíades was lying on the road about 500 meters from a pedestrian bridge when the car passed over him.
The driver who said he didn’t see the man called 911 emergency when he felt a bump.
There have been 34 fatalities in Chiriqui so far this year. In 2017 there were 420 deaths nationwide, including 136 pedestrians and 30 hit and run incidents, 29 rollovers, and the rest due to collisions.
